The Heisman Trophy has predominantly been won by offensive players, but Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter has a chance to change that. Hunter is a star wide receiver and cornerback who is entering his second season at Colorado.
Entering the 2024 college football season, oddsmakers don't think Heisman has a chance to win the award. Hunter is listed at +6000 to win the award, which is the 24th best odds, which doesn't imply much of a chance.
Here are three reasons why Hunter can win the Heisman trophy in 2024.
3 reasons why Travis Hunter can win the Heisman trophy
#1. Being a two-way star
Travis Hunter is not only a lockdown corner but also a star wide receiver.
If Hunter can continue to be a shutdown corner like he was last season, it puts him in a good spot to get into Heisman contention. But, Hunter also needs to have a very successful year as a wide receiver and get into the top-five in stats in all of college football at wide receiver.
Hunter will likely need 5+ interceptions and 5+ touchdowns on offense to give him a legit chance, as he is doing something that not many players can do by being a dominant player on both sides of the ball.
#2. His & Colorado's popularity
Travis Hunter is one of the biggest superstars in college football, which will help him get votes for the Heisman Trophy. He also plays for Colorado, which will get plenty of national attention due to Deion Sanders, so voters will get to see plenty of Buffaloes games.
With Hunter already being a massive star, he has a leg up on other not-well-known players to receive votes. So, rather than having to play into consideration, he has to play himself out of consideration.
#3. No clear-cut No. 1
Entering the 2024 college football season, there is no clear front-runner to win the Heisman, which helps Hunter's chances.
Carson Beck is the betting favorite, but he didn't have a standout year in 2023. Outside of Beck, Quinn Ewers is considered the other favorite, but he has struggled to stay healthy and Arch Manning is ready to take over if he struggles.
If both those quarterbacks don't live up to expectations, it will allow Hunter to get more consideration if he can have success at both wide receiver and cornerback.
