Being the last college football team standing at the end of the season remains one of the most difficult tasks for any of the 134 Division I FBS schools. To secure a single national title is viewed as a massive accomplishment.

Very few schools have been able to bring home a title multiple times, but several programs have managed to build a championship dynasty culture. Here's a closer look at the four schools that have been crowned champions of college football more than three times in the last 50 years.

The Oklahoma Sooners have secured four college football national championships in the last 50 seasons, with their most recent coming in 2000. The Sooners were crowned champions in 1974 when they completed an undefeated season under Barry Switzer.

The 1974 Sooners teams went 11-0 and were the top-scoring team in the country, posting 43.0 points per game. Joe Washington was the featured back, rushing for 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns. Oklahoma was one of two championship teams that season alongside USC.

The Sooners went back-to-back in 1975, earning Switzer his second title. They finished 11-1 and defeated Michigan 14-6 in the Orange Bowl. Switzer earned his third and final college football title as the Sooners coach in 1985, when the team again went 11-1 and defeated the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions 25-10 in the Orange Bowl.

Oklahoma's next national title came 15 years later under second-year coach Bob Stoops. The Sooners finished unbeaten at 13-0 and defeated No. 3 Florida State 13-2 in the Orange Bowl.

The USC Trojans were co-title winners with Oklahoma during the 1974 season, being named as the champions of college football by the coaches poll, FWAA and NFF. The Trojans went 10-1-1 that season and defeated No. 3 Ohio State 18-17 in the Rose Bowl.

They then shared the 1978 national championship with Alabama after finishing the season 12-1 under John Robinson. They once again made a trip to the Rose Bowl, where they defeated No. 5 Michigan 17-10.

USC secured back-to-back national titles under Pete Carroll in 2003 and 2004. They finished the 2003 season 12-1 and once again defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl 28-14. While the AP and the FWAA named the Trojans national champs, LSU won the BCS national title in 2003.

The Trojans completed an undefeated season in 2004, going 13-0, backed by one of the top rosters in college football history. They smashed Oklahoma 55-19 in the Orange Bowl to win the BCS national championship and bring home the program's fourth national title in the last 50 years.

Miami, 5 titles

The Miami Hurricanes have won five college football national titles in the last 50 years under four different coaches.

Howard Schnellenberger won the first national title in the program's history in 1983, when the team went 11-1 and defeated No. 1 Nebraska 31-30 in the Orange Bowl.

Jimmy Johnson was the next coach of the Hurricanes to bring the program a title when they finished 12-0 in 1987. Miami finished second in the country, allowing just 9.2 points per game to opponents, and defeated Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl 20-14 to secure the title.

Dennis Erickson brought two college football national titles to Miami in 1989 and 1991, including an unbeaten 12-0 season during the 1991 title run.

Miami's most recent title came in 2001 under Larry Coker when the Canes finished 12-0 with the nation's top defense. They finished off their most recent title run with a 37-14 Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska to secure their fifth national championship in the last 50 years.

Alabama, 9 titles

The Alabama Crimson Tide have been the most successful college football team by far within the last 50 years. They own nine national titles over that span, much in part to Bear Bryant and Nick Saban.

Bryant secured back-to-back titles in 1978 and 1979 while only losing one game during those two seasons.

Their next national title came in 1992 under Gene Stallings, when they finished a 13-0 undefeated season and took down the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes in the Sugar Bowl.

It took another 17 seasons before Nick Saban brought home the first of his six national championships. The Saban dynasty began with his first title in 2009, and he then won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

Alabama didn't wait long to make its mark on the College Football Playoff when it took home the trophy in 2015. That national championship under Saban was then followed by another in 2017 and its most recent title in 2020.
