Special teams chicanery is an amazing part of EA Sports' College Football 25. But it can be a challenge to know when to spring some special teams trickery. Certainly, anyone playing head-to-head has to keep an eye open for fake punts and other tricks.
The computer is significantly less likely to get tricky but can certainly pull out a few unusual wrinkles. In any case, any serious player of College Football 25 needs to have a few tricks up his or her sleeve. Here are a few special teams possibilities.
Top five special teams trick plays in College Football 25
Fake Punt FB flat
It's exactly what it sounds like. It's a fake punt where the punter throws to a fullback who is peeling off from what's essentially a tight end position into the flat to receive a pass. If the gunner on that side can make a good block, the play can be sprung for a big gain.
Fake Punt Off Tackle
It's not the most adventurous fake punt; in fact, it might be the most basic. The personal protector takes the direct snap and runs off tackle on the short side of the formation. It's not a plan that's particularly useful for big play gains. But on 4th and 1 or 4th and 2, it's a massive play to use.
Fake Field Goal K Flip
The only thing better than a good fake punt is a fake field goal. This one calls for the holder to take the snap and deliver a flip pass to the kicker, who can run to the open side of the field. Given that it involves the kicker running a long way, you need a speedy kicker or a fast asleep defense.
Fake Field Goal Rollout Pass
This is the percentage play on fake field goals. The holder will roll right and should have two possible open receivers on that side. Any defense should be looking for that, but any offense is going to take the occasional chance on gaining gridiron glory with this fake.
(Any) Kick Return
Yeah, it's not a trick play. But unlike some other versions of the game, which tended to make breaking a kickoff return way too difficult, a speedy kick returner is able to break free at just about any time. maybe it's the overly difficult kicking mechanism now.
Or maybe it's just that the best special teams play is the one that actually isn't tricky but just game-breaking.
