Week 9 of the college football season is officially over. Some college football coaches are on the verge of getting fired due to inconsistent play and poor performance.
There are a few notable names that fit that description and could be on the unemployment line soon.
5 college football coaches on the hot seat
#1 Lincoln Riley, USC
It is difficult not to put USC Trojans coach Lincoln Riley on this list. The Trojans are 4-4 (2-4 Big Ten) thus far and have blown fourth-quarter leads in each of their last three losses.
Lincoln Riley still has a lot of time remaining on his current 11-year, $110 million contract but the program has gotten worse each season. Expect to hear his name being discussed as one of the college football coaches who are on the verge of being fired.
Even with a solid 42-20 home win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Week 9, things are still shaky and Riley hasn't shown the ability to step up enough.
#2 Mack Brown, North Carolina
Mack Brown is one of the legendary coaches in college football and is one of three current college football coaches that have won a national championship.
However, it appears that he has lost the momentum, as the 73-year-old coach is currently 4-4 and at risk of missing a bowl game entirely with three of their four remaining games in the ACC.
With the program taking a step back and Brown's buyout not being too much right now, reportedly around $3 million, this seems like something that UNC could do in the immediate future.
#3 Trent Dilfer, UAB
It is time to pull the plug on the Trent Dilfer experiment at UAB, as things have not gone well for the team since he took over. The program is now 5-14 (3-9 AAC) as we are in Year 2 of his coaching.
However, with a 1-6 record this season, including being winless in four American Conference games, the Blazers just have not looked any better with Dilfer calling the shots.
The team signed Trent Dilfer to a five-year contract, meaning they would owe him $4.1 million if he is bought out before Dec. 1.
#4 Dave Aranda, Baylor
Dave Aranda continues to have his name pop up on hot seat lists as he is now 27-29 (17-25 Big 12) in his fifth year with the Baylor Bears.
He has gone .500 in just one season but outside of a 12-2 campaign in 2021, there has been little evidence of him being a quality coach who can win games at the highest level.
#5 Ryan Walters, Purdue
Ryan Walters has only been in the job as the Purdue Boilermakers coach since the 2023 season. Things seemingly are not looking well. With the Big Ten expansion, it is difficult for them to fall even further in the conference.
The schedule couldn't get any easier, as their remaining matchups have a combined record of 28-10. Looking for Walters' replacement should be a logical move for Purdue in the coming weeks.
