The race to the College Football Playoff is heating up as teams around the country are fighting to build their respective playoff resumes. Entering Week 8, time is running out for some teams who are on the outside looking in on the playoff race.

These five losses could prove to be the costliest after a chaotic Week 8 college football slate.

Top 5 costliest college football losses from Week 8

1. Alabama loses to Tennessee

Entering Week 8, the Alabama Crimson Tide were looking to bounce back after a historic upset loss to Vanderbilt followed by a shaky win over South Carolina. The Tide took a 7-0 lead into the half, but Tennessee's 24-point second-half performance propelled the Volunteers to a 24-17 win.

The Tide's playoff chances have seemingly diminished after falling to 5-2 with a 2-2 record in the Southeastern Conference. Alabama dropped to No. 15 in the AP Poll, their lowest ranking since 2010.

2. Texas loses to Georgia

The top-ranked Texas Longhorns were looking to continue their impressive win streak entering Week 8 versus the Georgia Bulldogs. The Longhorns struggled offensively and were shut out in the first half as the Bulldogs took a 23-0 lead into the locker rooms.

The second half saw more of the same for Texas, as the Longhorns mustered just two touchdowns, both in the third quarter. Texas' offensive struggles will be something to monitor down the stretch of the season despite only dropping to No. 5 in the AP Poll.

3. Nebraska loses to Indiana

The Nebraska Cornhuskers weren't necessarily viewed as true playoff contenders entering Week 8 but still boasted a 5-1 record through six games. Nebraska looked to pull off a season-defining upset going on the road to Indiana and bolster their playoff chances.

The Cornhuskers were dominated on the road, suffering a 56-7 loss and falling to 5-2 on the season entering their Week 9 matchup versus Ohio State. Matt Rhule falls to 2-21 versus ranked teams in his career, with his team's playoff hopes destroyed.

4. Texas Tech loses to Baylor

The Texas Tech Red Raiders were the toast of the Big 12 entering Week 8, with a 5-1 record on the season and an undefeated 3-0 record versus Big 12 Conference opponents.

Despite going into their matchup versus the Baylor Bears as a 4.5-point favorite, Texas Tech suffered a 59-35 blowout loss, sending their playoff hopes spiraling.

5. James Madison loses to Georgia Southern

With a 5-1 record entering this weekend, the James Madison Dukes were regarded as one of the top Group of Five teams in the country.

The Dukes looked to rebuild their win streak following a loss to ULM in Week 6, traveling to Georgia Southern as a two-possession favorite over the Eagles. However, they were stymied on the road and suffered 28-14 as they fell to 5-2.
