Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa faced a major setback during Thursday night's 31-10 loss against the Buffalo Bills.
During the third quarter of the game, Tagovailoa suffered a devastating head injury that was later confirmed to be a concussion.
Tagovailoa has suffered from concussions before as well, two of which happened in 2022 within the same week. He also faced a similar situation during his early playing days when he played for Nick Saban's Alabama during a matchup against Mississippi State, where he also broke his nose.
During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Saban talked about what happened to Tagovailoa and offered his thoughts on the situation:
"First of all, I will talk to him today. I haven't been able to get a hold of him yet, I have a house down there in Florida, so we get together on occasion when I am there. Played golf in the offseason. Tua is such a great competitor, but I think this has to be a medical decision. You have to let medical people who understand the circumstances these injuries, these concussions and when you have multiple concussions, that's not a good sign."
"I think Tua and his family and everyone else should listen to all the medical evidence to make sure that you're not compromising your future health-wise by continuing to play football. But I think that's a medical decision. I don't think that's something for me to speculate on. I know a lot of people are doing it, and more power to them. But the family should not be influenced by that. Tua should not be influenced by that. That should all be influenced by medical professionals."
Tua Tagovailoa once recalled a hilarious situation with Nick Saban
Saban is known for his passionate style of coaching, he also admitted to having the "never having relief syndrome", which means even during a time of celebration, the former Alabama coach was always on the lookout for how to get better.
Out of many ass-chewing stories, one was narrated by the Dolphins quarterback, during an interview on "The Rich Eisen Show" in February 2020.
The memory takes place from the 2017 national championship game when Tagovailoa upset Saban for getting sacked on 2nd and 26.
He later made it up to the team by completing a 41-yard touchdown pass that helped Alabama secure the nail-biting victory.
After the game ended, Saban pulled Tagovailoa to the side and asked what happened on the field, while the former quarterback thought it was a good time to joke with his coach, it wasn't:
“When we got into the locker room when everything settled down, he was still the same coach,” Tagovailoa said. “He pulled me to the side like ‘what were you thinking taking a sack?’ Being who he is… he pulled me to the side and said, you know, ‘why did you take the sack?’ And I thought it was a good time to joke with him – I mean, we won the national championship."
"So I told him ‘well we needed more room to throw the ball, coach.’ He looked at me, and like, I was laughing. He’s like ‘that’s not funny.’ I mean, I didn’t know what else to do in that situation. I was like ‘OK, I’m sorry coach.’ So I shook his hand and he just moved on.”
Fans are intrigued to see what the future holds for Tagovailoa and if they'll be able to see their quarterback on the field again.
