Born on January 2, 2004, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Abdul Carter attended La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. He committed to Penn State over offers from South Carolina and Ole Miss. Carter joined Penn State in June 2022 and quickly made an impact, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors as a freshman. He transitioned from linebacker to defensive end in 2023 and has since been recognized as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2024.

Carter enrolled at Penn State in June 2022, he played a significant role as a linebacker during his freshman year, finishing the season with 56 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks, which led the team. His performance earned him second-team All-Big Ten honors. In his sophomore season, Carter started all 13 games and accumulated 48 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. This season, Carter was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year after recording a career-high 60 total tackles and ten sacks.

Carter was selected as the semifinalist for the 2024 Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Bednarik Award, the Lombardi Award, and the Lott IMPACT Trophy.
