Florida State University and its football coach, Mike Norvell, announced an important restructuring of his contract on Monday. This revision includes Norvell contributing $4.5 million toward the university's Vision of Excellence initiative.
This new fundraising campaign focuses on revenue sharing for student-athletes and aims to enhance their overall experience while improving coaching resources, facilities and fan engagement.
"I presented this to our administration in an effort to boost the support of our student-athletes while recognizing that the results and expectations need to be upheld to the highest level,” Novell said in a statement. I wanted to be proactive in my financial assistance through this time of transition as we all push forward to get back to the standard of Florida State football.
"Great days are ahead, and I'm grateful to coach these players and lead this staff. We have been hard at work to uphold the tradition here at Florida State, and I believe this step will help accelerate the process to where I know we are going."
FSU's vice president and director of athletics, Michael Alford, praised Norvell’s commitment and said:
"We are grateful for Coach Norvell's commitment to our student-athletes. He is a high-character person who took an honest assessment of what the program needed from its leader to move forward. I'm excited about the future of Florida State football.
"FSU will continue to be a leader in the new structure of collegiate athletics, and that includes how we provide for our student-athletes. It will take additional support. I'm not going to be shy about encouraging others to follow Coach Norvell's actions and contribute however they can."
Coach Mike Norvell's FSU journey and 2024 season overview
Mike Norvell’s tenure at Florida State has seen many ups and downs. He was hired in December 2019 and had to navigate a global pandemic during his first season in Tallahassee. Despite the hurdles, Norvell made history by becoming the only first-year coach in ACC history to defeat a top-five team.
By 2022, Norvell had turned the Seminoles into a 10-win team, earning himself a multi-year contract extension. In 2023, he led Florida State to its first ACC championship since 2014, finishing the season with a perfect 13-0 record.
His first season ended with a 3-6 record, and by his third year, Florida State achieved bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019, capped by a victory in the Cheez-It Bowl. The Seminoles finished the 2022 season with a 10-3 record, ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 10 in the Coaches’ Poll.
The 2023 season was a highlight of Norvell’s career. Ranked No. 8 in the preseason AP Poll, the Seminoles claimed the ACC title and finished as the nation’s only undefeated Power Five champion left out of the College Football Playoff.
Even though FSU faced a defeat to Georgia in the Orange Bowl, Norvell received accolades, including ACC Coach of the Year and the Bobby Dodd Trophy.
However, the 2024 season was a stark contrast and has been rough. The Seminoles struggled to a 2-10 record, their worst since 1974, raising questions about the program’s trajectory.
Despite the setbacks, Norvell’s latest move to restructure his contract demonstrates his commitment to revitalizing Florida State football.
