Following Nick Saban's retirement on January 11, 2024, fans were left concerned about the way forward for Alabama. After Kalen DeBoer was appointed Nick Saban's successor, many analysts considered the former Washington head coach the perfect choice to take the Crimson Tide's legacy further.
DeBoer has proven himself everywhere he's been, be it at Fresno State or at the Huskies. His coaching abilities are fairly translated into his 104-12 overall coaching record.
Since his appointment, one of the key differences fans noticed was Jalen Milroe's enhanced level of leadership under DeBoer's coaching style. During an interview on Thursday, Milroe talked about one quality of DeBoer that he's noticed since his takeover at Alabama
“I enjoy being around him beyond the coaching. He’s done a really good job of just getting to know the players. With the short time that he’s been there, everyone has built a relationship with Coach DeBoer," Milroe said via SB Nation.
“One thing that spoke out to me with him initially getting there is that everybody on the football team has his phone number. They can communicate with him whenever they want to," he added.
"He also has, by his office, a room where players can just sit in there and just have downtime and also a time where they can come in and communicate with him on a regular basis whenever they want to talk to Coach. That’s been awesome.”
Difference between Nick Saban's and Kalen DeBoer coaching style
Nick Saban was known for his strict endeavors and anger outbursts, many coaches and players have faced their fair share of "ass chewing" including Oregon's head coach Dan Lanning during his time with the Crimson Tide.
One of the biggest examples of Saban's passionate coaching style was when he spanked the redshirt freshman Aj McCarron during a close matchup against Mississippi State.
While the Alabama players were used to Saban's military style of coaching, Kalen DeBoer decided to take the other route by making changes to the practice timings and also allowing music while they brush off their skills during the offseason.
