For the first time this season, the App State Mountaineers (4-4) have won back-to-back games. Their next matchup is against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (4-4). The teams enter the contest with contrasting form, as the Chanticleers are currently on a three-game losing streak.
Thus, ahead of today's game, let's examine the Mountaineers' starting quarterback and potential backup.
App State's starting QB against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in Week 11
Joey Aguilar has started all eight games for the App State Mountaineers in the 2024 college football season. Aguilar is currently in his senior year, and he's on track to post career highs in several categories.
Aguilar has amassed 2,270 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions ahead of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers game. His 71.2 QBR ranks in the Top 40 in the country.
Aguilar has come a long way from playing quarterback for Diablo Valley College. He's now the undisputed starter on a Division I school chasing bowl game eligibility. A win against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers would leave the Mountaineers just one game off being eligible to appear in a bowl game.
App State Mountaineers' QB depth chart
According to the College Football Network, Billy Wiles is Aguilar's backup on the App State Mountaineers. Wiles is currently in his junior year and has played in some of the most renowned programs in collegiate football.
Wiles started as a top prospect at Stone Bridge High School. He earned numerous scholarship offers, including but not limited to Harvard, Holy Cross, UMass, Yale and Tulane. However, he decided to join Clemson, and he subsequently became a Tigers' quarterback.
Wiles initially joined Clemson as a walk-on, deciding to bet on himself thriving at a top-notch quarterback factory. His efforts paid off, as he was offered a scholarship ahead of the 2022 season. After not playing in 2022, Wiles entered the transfer portal and accepted an offer from Southern Miss.
At Southern Miss, Wiles played in 11 games and posted a stat line of 1,940 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He once again chose to enter the transfer portal.
The App State Mountaineers brought in Wiles to serve as a backup to incumbent starter Joey Aguilar. While Wiles has yet to play this season, at least the Mountaineers know that they have solid insurance at the QB spot.
