The Texas Longhorns are one of the best college football teams in the country and are No. 6 in the AP Poll with a 7-1 (3-1 Southeastern Conference) record so far this season. They were able to bounce back with a 27-24 road win over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday after losing to Georgia in the previous week.
A major part of the win was the defense, which got stops and stepped up in a tough SEC matchup, along with senior defensive back Michael Taaffe, who also played well.
Taaffe was named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week along with Ole Miss Rebels linebacker Suntarine Perkins. On his Instagram story, Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning congratulated Taafe by giving a shoutout for his jersey number by captioning it with "one sixxxxxxx."
Will the Texas Longhorns make the College Football Playoff?
The Texas Longhorns have been one of the most dominant programs in all of college football and have an open week this week. One of the biggest questions for them is if they are going to make the SEC Championship Game.
The Longhorns already lost the tiebreaker to the Georgia Bulldogs after losing in Week 8 and have a head-to-head matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies to end the regular season. Texas needs to win that game to own that tiebreaker and not have multiple teams ahead of them.
It is likely that even without an SEC Championship Game appearance, the Texas Longhorns would be able to make the College Football Playoff in the 12-team format. The SEC is also likely to have more than the two teams in the CFP than its championship game contenders. If the Longhorns go 3-1 to end the regular season, they should lock up a spot in the playoff.
