Army uniform for 2023 Army-Navy game

In what has been a tradition for the annual rivalry game, Army has released its special uniform for the game against Navy on Dec. 9. The Black Knights' uniform for the game in Foxborough, Massachusetts, is inspired by the 3rd infantry division, honoring the "Dogface Soldiers."

Numerous references to the division and its involvement in international conflicts can be seen on the uniforms. The striking uniform, entirely tan with black accents, pays homage to the 3rd Infantry Division's efforts in Operation Iraqi Freedom's littered desert terrain.

The scheme of color of the limited-edition uniforms correlates with the vehicle paint schemes and camouflage patterns used in that operation in Iraq. There’ve been a lot of reactions within the college football world on social media since the release of the uniform by the Black Knights.

Let’s take a look at some of the reactions of fans on X:

Navy earlier released its uniform for the game against Army

Earlier on Monday, Navy and Under Armour unveiled the uniform the Midshipmen will be donning in their rivalry game against the Black Knight. The special edition uniform was designed to honor the U.S. Submarine Force as noted in a press statement following the release.

"The entire uniform is flooded with Eclipse Navy to mimic the covert design of a submarine hull. The uniform was purposefully designed to embody the Force’s nickname: Silent Service. The overall design was intended to be simple and utilitarian to convey the stealth purposes of a submarine’s design." (via SB Nation)

The helmets in the new uniform also carry on the submarine motif. The right side of the helmet depicts an underwater Virginia-class submarine while the left side features the submariner pin integrated with the Navy's customary anchor. The uniform has had a positive reception.

The Army-Navy football series

The Army-Navy game is one of the oldest and most keenly contested rivalry matchups in college football. The rivalry game has a lot of influence at the national level as it has witnessed the attendance of the sitting president of the United States on several occasions.

The military matchup commanded a wide level of exposure over a long period of time. Since 1945, the game has been broadcast nationally on ABC, CBS, or NBC. The game has been televised by CBS since 1996 and the network owns the broadcast rights until 2028.

Notably, the first game of the series occurred in 1890 when Navy had a 24-0 victory over Army. A total of 123 games have been played in the rivalry so far. The Midshipmen lead the series with a 62-54-7 record.
