Johnson’s breakthrough came during his freshman year in 2023. He was named the Pop-Tarts Bowl MVP while leading Kansas State to a victory against NC State, he threw 178 yards, scored two touchdowns, and rushed for 71 yards. Johnson's performance against Texas Tech set a school record, he rushed for five touchdowns in a single game. He rushed for seven touchdowns in 2023, was ranked second for a freshman in Kansas State history, and tied for the highest amongst true freshman quarterbacks in the country. He received several other honors, such as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and Honorable Mention for Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2023.
