Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes have secured a high-profile player via the transfer portal. The Buckeyes might be in the middle of the expanded college football playoffs, but that hasn't stopped them from making moves for the foreseeable future.
The Buckeyes have added Ethan Onianwa, a highly rated offensive lineman, to an impressive O-line.
CFB analyst Tom Luginbill posted about the star's commitment on X/Twitter:
"He's the best offensive lineman in the portal, and it’s not even close. Can’t believe he didn’t declare."
Rice University's loss is Ohio State's gain for the 2025 college football season.
Who is Ethan Onianwa?
Ethan Onianwa is a right tackle prospect who got his football education at Cinco Ranch High School, Dekaney. He helped the school reach the semifinals of the 2020 6A D2 playoffs. His talents earned him numerous offers, and he decided to take his talents to Rice University to play for the Owls.
Onianwa saw limited action in his freshman season, but that all changed in his sophomore year. He amassed 13 appearances (12 starts) in year two and became an integral part of the team's offensive line. He continued the form in year three, earning 13 starts and earning AAC All-Academic 2024 honors.
Onianwa started 23 consecutive games and was synonymous with the team's offensive identity. He'll now move to a more mainstream program for the 2025 season.
Why did Ethan Onianwa choose Ryan Day's Ohio State Buckeyes?
Onianwa was among the most highly sought-after offensive linemen to enter the transfer portal.
Onianwa likely chose Ryan Day's Buckeyes due to the program's strength and its proven track record of sending high-caliber collegiate football players to the NFL. He'll likely feature for one season before declaring for the 2026 NFL draft.
Onianwa is expected to replace Josh Fryar, the Buckeyes' starting right tackle, who has retired from collegiate eligibility. In 2025, he will bring grit and experience to the Buckeyes' O-line.
