Bill O'Brien must pick a starting quarterback in his first season as Boston College coach. O'Brien has enjoyed great success as a coordinator in the NFL, and it remains to be seen whether he can translate that success for the Eagles.
Choosing an impeccable QB1 is highly important for collegiate football programs. Let's explore O'Brien's starting quarterback and his potential competition.
Who will be Bill O'Brien's QB1 in 2024?
Thomas Castellanos
Thomas Castellanos will be Boston College's starting quarterback for the 2024 college football season. Castellanos played every game in 2023 and led the team to a 6-6 regular season record and a bowl game win over SMU.
Castellanos put up a stat line of 2,248 passing yards and 1,113 rushing yards in the 2023 season. He was one of the ACC's best dual-threat QBs and a cheat code against the teams with a dodgy rush defense.
Castellanos earned Bowl Game MVP honors when he put up a stat line of 102 passing yards, 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Mustangs. He's the signal-caller to beat in the Boston College quarterback room.
Emmett Morehead
Emmett Morehead last featured for Boston College in a significant capacity in 2022. That year, he appeared in 10 games with four starts. He put up figures of 1,254 yards and 10 touchdowns in his true freshman year, an impressive stat line feat.
However, Morehead saw little playing time in his sophomore season due to the rise of Thomas Castellanos. Furthermore, every quarterback, in theory, starts with a clean state under Bill O'Brien. As such, a solid 2024 camp can put him in the position to earn more game time in Boston College's offense.
Jack Brandon
Jack Brandon starts the 2024 season as the projected QB3. The pocket passer has yet to play meaningful minutes with the Eagles.
Other quarterbacks on the roster looking to earn playing time are Peter Delaportas, Shane Hanafin, Jacobe Robinson and Matthew Rueve.
