He started his collegiate football journey with Duke over offers from Akron, Army, Charlotte, Kent State, Liberty, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Vanderbilt.

Last season as a junior, Johnson had a strong season and was named an All-ACC honorable mention as he complied 56 tackles, two sacks, and four pass breakups. After three seasons with the Blue Devils, Johnson recorded 128 total tackles, 7.5 sacks and two interceptions. Johnson entered the transfer portal in 2023 to commit to Oregon Ducks with one year of eligibility remaining.
