Miami RedHawks quarterback Brett Gabbert sustained an injury in the fourth quarter of the game against Toledo on Saturday. He was on the verge of leading the RedHawks to a fantastic comeback but had to leave the game with an injury as his team was handed its first loss of the season.
Aside from the 21-17 defeat, Gabbert's injury comes as a huge blow for Miami in its push to win the Mid-America Conference championship this season. He entered the Week 8 game against Toledo as the conference leader in passing yards, showcasing his impact on the team.

Brett Gabbert's injury update
The precise severity of Brett Gabbert's injury was not immediately clear as the university has yet to give an official update. However, the outlook from Miami's coaches was not optimistic. Realistically, the quarterback could be out for the rest of the 2023 college football season.
RedHawks coach Chuck Martin indicated the quarterback could be sidelined for the rest of the season. Martin felt a deep sense of sympathy for Gabbert:
“I really felt terrible for Brett. I really thought this would be the year (for him). Everything he’s done for this program, this school. His fight, his competitiveness. It’s everything you’d want in anything you’d do.”
What happened to Brett Gabbert?
Gabbert's injury occurred when he was met head-on by Toledo's 295-pound defensive tackle, Judge Culpepper. Amid the chaos of players pushing, pulling and colliding, Gabbert suffered a severe break in his right leg, causing him to crumple in pain on the goal line.
He let out a scream of agony and removed his helmet. Players from both teams who witnessed the injury signaled to the benches for immediate medical assistance. The medical team promptly immobilized his leg with an air cast, and he was subsequently transported from the field to the hospital via ambulance.
When will Brett Gabbert return?
It remains unclear when Gabbert will return to action for the Miami RedHawks. However, there are strong indications that the quarterback won’t play again this season.
Backup quarterback Aveon Smith, who started nine games last season when Gabbert was sidelined due to injury, assumed the signal-caller role against Toledo. It is possible that he could continue as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
Gabbert has had an extraordinary journey with Miami, marked by accomplishments and challenges. He currently ranks third among all-time RedHawk quarterbacks in career passing yards and touchdown passes.
