BYU vs SMU Prediction & Betting Tips - September 6 | College football Week 2

Week 2 of the 2024 college football season is set to begin on Friday and one of the games on that night will feature the BYU Cougars against the SMU Mustangs. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be shown on ESPN2.

BYU is coming off a 41-13 win over Southern Illinois on Aug. 31. On the other hand, the Mustangs are 2-0 as they played in Week 0 and are coming off a 59-7 blowout win over Houston Christian.

BYU vs SMU: Prediction

The BYU Cougars go on the road to play the SMU Mustangs. SMU is an 11.5-point favorite at home.

BYU is coming off a solid Week 1 win at home as the Cougars were led by quarterback Jake Retzlaff who went 20-for-30 for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Chase Roberts recorded 108 yards on seven receptions.

“It was a lot of fun to play football again. That’s what I got to say about it. The guys around me played incredible at every position,” Retzlaff said, via Deseret.com, noting how the Cougars rushed for 179 yards and passed for 348. "That is a total team effort if I have ever heard of one.”

Meanwhile, SMU is now in the ACC and started the year with a 29-24 road win over Nevada in Week 0. In Week 1, the Mustangs cruised to a 59-7 win where QB Prestone Stone went 6-for-9 for 78 yards and two touchdowns before being removed from the game.

"They're a really good team... Defense plays very disciplined, they don't beat themselves," Stone said via SI. "I think it's going to come down to us just being consistent, out-disciplining them, and doing our jobs."

SMU has a much better offense which will be led by Stone and the Mustangs should be able to cruise to a win. BYU does have a good defense, but after a scare in Week 1, the Mustangs offense is rolling.

Being at home, SMU will also have an advantage and is expected to cruise to a lopsided win.

Prediction: SMU 37, BYU 21
