DeSean Jackson has been appointed the new head coach of the Delaware State Hornets. This marks the former Cal standout’s first head coaching job since retiring from professional football.

Jackson becomes the latest former NFL star to transition into a college football head coaching role. He joins former teammate Michael Vick, who was recently hired by Norfolk State. In his first statement as head coach of the Hornets, Jackson emphasized the importance of building a strong team culture.

In a statement released via ESPN, DeSean Jackson said:

"The opportunity for me to help create another chapter here at Delaware State University is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy figuring his way to manhood through accountability, mentorship, discipline and achievement."

He continued:

"If we build that kind of culture at DSU, we will attract the right talent and rapidly change the trajectory of this program. I can't wait to begin."

Jackson brings years of experience as a Pro Bowl wide receiver and return specialist to his new role at Delaware State. His reputation could help attract recruits who grew up watching him play or using him in video games — a significant advantage for a program that has historically lacked high-profile recruits.

DeSean Jackson has quite the task at Delaware State

While it's clear that DeSean Jackson is relishing the opportunity to start his head coaching career at Delaware State, he's certainly aware of the difficult task ahead. The Hornets won just one game in the 2024 college football season, and their quarterbacks threw for more than 200 yards only twice all season (both resulting in losses).

Furthermore, their wide receiver corps leaves much to be desired, with only one player surpassing 100 receiving yards in 2024 (Nyghee Lolley against Morgan State). Jackson will be tasked with using his experience as a Pro Bowl talent at the wide receiver position to recruit, develop and motivate his pass catchers for the 2025 season and beyond.

Jackson knows a thing or two about winning, having set records and enjoyed a record-filled career in professional football. However, it will be interesting to watch how he transitions from borderline NFL icon to head coach in the MEAC.
