Cal vs Wake Forest: Preview
Cal is a seven-point favorite and the over/under is set at 55 points.
The Golden Bears snapped their four-game losing streak as they dominated the Beavers from start to finish.
“Coach Wilcox talks about we’re trying to take down the dam,” Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza said on Oct. 27, via SI. “Ironically enough, because beavers build dams, we broke the dam today.
"It was those four close (losses). We were playing so much good football — it was so frustrating. However, now that we’re finally able to not just talk the talk but walk the walk, we’re going to have great momentum into our last four games and they’re all great, formidable opponents but we believe in ourselves.”
For the season, Cal is led by Mendoza who has thrown for 2,095 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. Jaivian Thomas has rushed for 470 yards and five TDs, and Jack Endries has 421 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Cal is led by Nohl Williams's six interceptions, Xavier Carlton's seven sacks and Teddye Buchanan's 77 tackles.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest is on a two-game winning streak. Against Stanford, the Demon Deacons led 14-0 after the first quarter which proved to be the difference in the win.
Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson was impressed with the team's performance.
“We’ve got off to some fast starts here in the past,” Clawson said in the postgame presser, via WFUOGB. “I think all of our players and coaches deserve a lot of credit — after being 1-3 and left for dead — and being able to pull off three wins in one-score road games; that’s not easy to do.”
This season, Wake Forest is led by Hank Bachmeier who has thrown for 1,958 yards, 12 TDs and six interceptions. Demond Claiborne has rushed for 711 yards and eight TDs, while Taylor Morin has 496 receiving yards and one TD.
Defensively, the Demon Deacons have eight interceptions, Kevin Porter has 3.5 sacks and Nick Anderson has 82 tackles.
This should be a close game but Cal has been playing well this season and its offense is clicking. Mendoza should be able to carve up Wake Forest's secondary to get an early lead.
Both offenses are solid and this should be a shootout; however, Cal will get the win.
Prediction: Cal 28, Wake Forest 23
