The Golden Bears kept up the pressure on their opponents throughout all four quarters of the game. Resultantly, the California Golden Bears defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 28-0. As a result, the Helms Athletic Foundation and the National Championship Foundation (NCF) declared the California Golden Bears as the National champion.

In 1922, the California Golden Bears won their second National Championship. The team, once again under coach Andy Smith, established a 9-0-0 record and became the Pacific Coast Conference Champions. Then in the Big Game on November 25, 1922, they faced the Stanford football team, who they beat 28-0. They were declared as the National Champions by the National Championship Foundation (NCF).
