Can Arch Manning become the next great Texas Longhorn? 3 bold predictions for Steve Sarkisian's gunslinger

Arch Manning set for first career start

Arch Manning joined the Texas Longhorns as one of the most highly touted quarterback prospects of all time. The five-star prospect - and top-ranked overall recruit - in the 2023 recruiting class has spent much of his early career on the sidelines. He attempted just five passes as a true freshman, completing two for 30 yards, adding seven rushing yards on three carries.

Manning has appeared in two games this season, throwing for 318 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. He has completed 77.8% of his passes while adding 53 rushing yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

While the first of those appearances saw him enter the game late in a blowout, he received much more playing time last week, as starter Quinn Ewers left the game in the second quarter with an oblique injury.

The issue will keep Ewers sidelined for the No. 1-ranked Longhorns' Week 1 matchup with the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, opening the door for Manning to make his first career start. Let's take a look at three bold predictions for the redshirt freshman.

Three bold predictions for Arch Manning

#1 He will account for at least three touchdowns and no turnovers

Arch Manning has played great football in limited action this season. He's yet to turn the ball over, accounting for seven total touchdowns. Look for him to continue to play well in his first career start and finish with at least three total touchdowns and no turnovers.

#2 Despite playing great, he will return to a backup role in Week 5

Despite the prediction that Arch Manning will be great in his first career start, don't expect him to remain in the role for much longer. Look for Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian to turn back to Quinn Ewers ahead of Week 5.

The matchup with the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks will mark the final non-conference game of the season. Their SEC schedule includes three ranked opponents.

#3 Manning will be the top player selected in the 2026 NFL Draft

Despite the prediction that Arch Manning will return to a backup role when Quinn Ewers is fully healthy, don't expect his draft stock to tank. He will still likely be the first player off the board in the 2026 NFL Draft.

He wouldn't be the first player to be drafted first overall despite only starting for one season in college. Cam Newton and Kyler Murray accomplished the feat, with both winning the Heisman Trophy in their lone season as a starter.
