Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers is gearing up for his third season under head coach Steve Sarkisian. After redshirting his freshman season at Ohio State, Ewers transferred to Texas ahead of the 2022 season and was immediately named the starting quarterback.
However, a question that looms is whether Ewers could go pro and declare for the upcoming NFL draft next year.
Can Quinn Ewers go pro? Texas QB's NFL draft eligibility explored
Yes, the Texas Longhorns quarterback can declare for the 2025 NFL draft and make his transition into professional football. In fact, Ewers was eligible to declare for this year's NFL draft as well. However, he still has two more years of collegiate eligibility left.
Quinn Ewers decided to not transition into the NFL this year and return to play for the Texas Longhorns. The quarterback had quite an impressive campaign last season under Sarkisian, putting up 3,479 passing yards along with 22 TD passes to help the Longhorns emerge as the Big 12 champions and make it to the college football playoffs.
Unfortunately, they lost in the semifinals to the Washington Huskies, bringing an end to their national championship hopes.
When asked about his decision to not declare for the 2024 draft, Ewers said:
"One more year with my teammates and one more year of development with Coach Sark made most sense," Ewers told ESPN.
Texas will have high hopes from Quinn Ewers in its SEC debut campaign
Both Texas and Oklahoma are officially going to play as members of the SEC Conference this upcoming season. With the SEC known to be arguably the toughest college football conference, Ewers will have much responsibility riding on his shoulders.
The quarterback is expected to be a potential candidate for the 2025 Heisman Trophy. With Ewers back in the mix, the Longhorns have a reliable quarterback on the field for their SEC debut. This also gives backup Arch Manning the time to further develop his skills before being passed on the torch as the program's QB1.
Steve Sarkisian also brought in Isaiah Bond and Amari Niblack from the transfer portal. With more firepower in the arsenal, Ewers will be looking to make the Longhorns a natty contender once again in the new 12-team playoff format era.
