Jeremy Pruitt has gone from coaching in the SEC to teaching PE. The former Tennessee head coach, who was fired in January 2021 for his involvement in a major recruiting scandal, has taken a job as a physical education teacher and middle school basketball coach at Plainview High School in Alabama, his alma mater.
Pruitt’s new role is a drastic downgrade from his previous positions as a defensive coordinator at Alabama, Florida State, and Georgia, and as the head coach of the Volunteers, where he made $3.8 million per year.
Now, he will be instructing P.E. classes and coaching the seventh and eighth-grade boys' basketball team at a school with fewer than 900 students.
The college football world had no mercy for Pruitt regarding his new job, which many saw as a deserved consequence for his cheating ways. Here are some of the best reactions from social media:
One user tweeted: "I hope those kids like McDonald's."
Another user tweeted: "Throw that dodgeball aight!"
Tennessee escapes postseason ban despite 18 Level I violations under Jeremy Pruitt
Jeremy Pruitt’s downfall was triggered by his multiple NCAA violations during his three-year stint at Tennessee, including providing improper benefits to recruits and their families through a secret fund that involved cash payments in fast food bags.
The NCAA recently slapped Pruitt with a six-year show-cause penalty, meaning that any NCAA member school that wants to hire him would have to face severe sanctions.
The NCAA also has finally delivered its verdict on the University of Tennessee football program after a long investigation into the violations committed under former head coach Pruitt. The Vols were found guilty of 18 Level I violations, the most serious kind, as part of more than 200 infractions that occurred during Pruitt’s three-year tenure.
However, Tennessee avoided a postseason ban, thanks to its “exemplary cooperation” with the NCAA. The school reported the violations to the NCAA and took swift action to fire several coaches and staff involved in the misconduct. The school also imposed scholarship reductions and recruiting restrictions as part of its self-imposed penalties.
