The surprises of the transfer portal can be the most exciting part. For instance, Colorado State LB Chase Wilson, off two excellent seasons at CSU, has chosen to enter the portal. Linebackers with Wilson's resume don't grow on trees. Even with just one season left to play, Wilson figures to have plenty of portal interest.
Wilson has been at Colorado State for five seasons. He played two games in the COVID season of 2020 and then three games in 2021, which means he can essentially redshirt both years.
It was in 2023 that Wilson exploded, and in the last two years, he had 205 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and five passes broken up. That production could draw interest from these schools for Wilson.
Chase Wilson transfer portal: Top 5 potential portal landing spots
5. Colorado
Coach Prime has been a portal machine in his tenure at Colorado. While the in-state move between Colorado and CSU is not typical, for an in-state guy, it could be the logical move.
When Wilson went to Colorado State, the Rams were a better program than Colorado. That's changed, and the chance to play in the big-time environment of the Buffs could be attractive to Wilson.
4. Purdue
Purdue needs plenty of help. The 1-11 Boilermakers have brought in former Missouri and UNLV coach Barry Odom to redirect their program.
Odom is a defensive guy and got some outstanding production out of linebackers at Missouri. The chance to play in the Big Ten, see plenty of action, and help Odom resurrect the Boilermakers could be an intriguing possibility for Wilson.
3. Utah
Kyle Whittingham's Utah squad had a disappointing 2024 season and he'll look to jump-start his program in 2025. Between seniors and portal departures, there'll certainly be some vacancies in the Utah defense. But the Big 12 seems like the most wide-open of the power conferences, and Wilson could help Utah move back towards the top of the league in 2025.
2. BYU
Off a near-miss at a College Football Playoff spot, the Cougars are a promising landing spot for many prospects. While BYU should return a fairly strong defense, their linebacking corps could certainly use a veteran with the experience that Wilson brings to the table. If the playing time question can be resolved, BYU could be a solid landing spot for Wilson.
1. UNLV
Dan Mullen is the head man now at UNLV. Mullen is known for offense and the Rebels have lost a whopping 32 players to the transfer portal. The 11-3 Rebels are in an odd position here, as they're somewhere between a retool and a rebuild.
Adding a veteran linebacker like Wilson could help cushion their landing and keep them near the top of the Mountain West.
