College Football Hall of Fame eligibility criteria

The College Football Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of all honors in the world of college football. It was established with the aim of immortalizing players and coaches who made giant strides and left indelible marks on the game.

Established in 1951 by the National Football Foundation, it is currently located in Atlanta, Georgia. It moved to the 94,256-square-foot facility in 2014 after spending several years in South Bend, Indiana. The building is adjacent to the Georgia World Congress Center and Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta.

Candidates for the College Football Hall of Fame are required to meet rigorous criteria to be eligible for the honor. Here's a look at the benchmarks needed for a player or coach to be inducted.

College Football Hall of Fame eligibility criteria

Getting inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame is no easy feat, and only a small percentage, precisely 0.02%, have been conferred the honor since its introduction.

The National Football Foundation is in charge of delineating the criteria by which candidates are assessed.

For players to be inducted, they must have received a major first-team All-America during their college football careers. Nomination for the honor can only come after at least 10 years after completing their college football career.

In a bid to bring in some sense of recency in the selection, nominees must have played their final year in college football within the last 50 years. Furthermore, players can only be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame after they have concluded their professional careers.

On the other hand, coaches are required to have served as a head coach in college football for at least 10 years to be eligible for induction. They are further required to have coached at least 100 games and achieved at least a .600 winning percentage.

There is also an eligibility time frame for coaches. They can only be nominated after three full seasons following their retirement or immediately upon retiring if he is at least 70 years old. Active coaches can be inducted if they've reached the age of 75.

The eligibility criteria of the College Football Hall of Fame have occasionally changed over time, sparking public and media criticism. So far, 1,093 players have been inducted, marking a 0.02 percentage while 233 coaches have also received the honor.
