Mike Norvell and Florida State got their first win of the season against the California Golden Bears which has left fans wondering if they're back in the playoff picture. It was a gritty defensive performance from FSU who pulled off a 14-9 win and handed the Golden Bears their first loss of the campaign.
While FSU is now in the win column with a 1-3 record, it is unlikely that the team will make the playoffs. Five teams automatically make the playoffs: the five highest-ranked conference champions. FSU is all but guaranteed to not be in the mix for one of those. The other seven slots go to the next seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP selection committee.
That said, there is a chance that if the Seminoles recover and play well the rest of the season, they could earn a spot in the playoffs. However, the team would need to go nearly undefeated from this point.
How the college football playoff picture looks after Week 4
After this week's games, fans are starting to get an idea of which teams will likely be in the playoff picture by the end of the season. The most interesting teams to look at are those who could earn a first-round open week. Since 12 teams make the playoffs, the four highest seeds earn an open week through the first round. Those teams will be the four highest-ranked conference champions.
After Week 4, the four highest-ranked conference leaders are Texas (SEC), Ohio State (Big Ten), Utah (Big 12) and Miami (ACC). The fifth conference leader that is projected to get an automatic playoff berth is UNLV (Mountain West).
Other teams that should be in the playoff picture based on their current records include Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Penn State and Clemson.
Teams to watch for the college football playoffs
There are a few other teams that could be in the playoff picture. One of the most notable omissions is Michigan. The Wolverines have a 3-1 record and are coming off an impressive win over USC. Their only loss is to No. 1 ranked Texas.
The Missouri Tigers are also another team to watch as they have a 4-0 record early in the year. The Tigers play their first ranked opponent in Week 6 against No. 25 Texas A&M.
