Colorado turning bowl-eligible finally became a reality after the Buffaloes beat the Cincinnati Bearcats 34-23 in Week 9 of college football action on Saturday night. Coach Deion Sanders' team improved to 6-2 for the season after surpassing last year's win total in Week 8 after blowing out the Arizona Wildcats 34-7.
At the beginning of the season, Coach Prime promised Buffs superfan Peggy Coppom, commonly known as "Miss Peggy," that he would lead the team to bowl eligibility.
The Buffs last gained bowl eligibility during the 2016 season when they finished 10-4 under former coach Mike MacIntyre. However, they were invited to the Valero Alamo Bowl in 2020 after finishing 4-2 during the COVID-19 shortened football season, where they met the Texas Longhorns and lost 55-23.
Coach Prime seeking prime bowl game for Colorado
After the Colorado Buffaloes beat the Arizona Wildcats 34-7 in Week 8 of college football action, they surpassed last season's win total. After the collapse of last season when the Buffs started the season 3-0 and finished 4-8, Colorado fans stayed optimistic but cautious about the team's bowl prospects.
The win against the Cincinnati Bearcats cemented the Buffs' bowl eligibility, and finally, fans, including superfan Miss Peggy, can celebrate. That goal was the bare minimum, according to Colorado's charismatic coach Deion Sanders, who revealed during his postgame news conference that he wants to get a prime bowl game for Peggy Coppom while winning the right way.
“We still ain’t got Peggy straight,” Sanders said. “We gotta get Peggy straight. Now we don’t really just wanna get Peggy to a bowl. Peggy got great taste. She’s sophisticated. She’s a lady, so we want to make sure we get her to a nice bowl, not just any bowl … We want to win.
“We want to win at all costs. But I value winning differently. I don’t want to just win on the go. I want to win off the field. I want to win in the classroom. I want to win in the community. Today, you saw that last week, our kids did a phenomenal job.
“I mean, I want to win in all facets of life. like with these young men, and that’s something I think we’re on our way to do.”
While the undefeated BYU Cougars and the Kansas State Wildcats are the bookmaker's favorites for the Big 12 championship game, the season still has a long way to go, and Colorado's bowl eligibility could be just the beginning for Buffs fans.
