After a brief period at Jackson State, Shelomi Sanders transferred to Colorado to continue her college basketball career. The guard followed the rest of her family to Boulder from J-State after her father, Deion Sanders, was hired as the new coach of the Buffaloes' football program in December 2023.

Ahead of the 2023-24 college basketball season, Shelomi's mother, Pilar Sanders, hyped up the guard as her career in Boulder was about to begin. Pilar posted a picture of Shelomi in Colorado's uniform on her Instagram page while dropping a brief note of anticipation for the season.

“Yep she's mine,....my lil baby girl 😂 @shelomisanders @cubuffswbb coming soon!!! 🎉🎉🎉,” Pilar wrote.

Shelomi Sanders’ journey in Boulder ended after one season

While Pilar Sanders had a lot of anticipation for her daughter’s career at Colorado, she didn’t stay long in Boulder. After one uneventful season with the Buffaloes, Shelomi Sanders transferred, a move that surprised many college athletics fans.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank my creator for allowing me to have this platform with amazing experiences," Shelomi said. “I want to thank my coaches and the university for accepting me to be a part of the family, it’s been a blessing accomplishing as much as we did.
“I would like to thank my family and my support system for always uplifting and pouring into me on and off the court as a student-athlete. My time at Colorado has been a treat with amazing experiences along the way. With intentional consideration and prayer, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Shelomi had the backing of her mother in the decision to transfer away from Colorado. However, Deion Sanders wasn’t cool with the move. The Pro Football Hall of Famer, who has made efforts to keep his children together, openly criticized the move.

Why Shelomi Sanders exited Colorado

Shelomi Sanders' decision to transfer way from Colorado wasn’t anticipated. However, she had good reason to make the move. During a livestream in August, she explained the reasons behind her decision.

“I don’t want to say anything too bad,” Shelomi said. “It just wasn’t good energy. It wasn’t good vibes. There wasn’t enough being poured into me as a player and young lady. If I didn’t leave when I did, I promise you I would’ve quit.”

A few weeks after hitting the portal, Shelomi announced her decision to transfer to Alabama A&M. This marked a return for her to the Southwestern Athletic Conference following her time at Jackson State.

Sanders totaled two points in 10 minutes across two games at Jackson State (21-10), which reached the WNIT in 2022-23. She had three points in five games and 12 minutes last season at Colorado, which had a senior-heavy team that went 24-10 and reached the Sweet 16.

Sanders has scored 14 points and played 44 minutes through eight games this season for Alabama A&M (5-3).
