On Monday, the Maryland Terrapins announced that athletic director Damon Evans had been awarded a two-year contract extension. The new deal will end after the 2028-29 season.

Evans has held the post since June 2018 and signed a contract extension in 2022, which was not announced to the public according to an ESPN report.

In the deal signed on Monday, the Terrapins athletic director will receive a base salary of $1 million ($750,000 in his previous contract) and $280,000 ($120,000 in his previous contract) in supplemental income every year.

University of Maryland president Darryll Pines announced the new deal via a statement released on Monday.

"In a transformative time in the collegiate landscape, Damon Evans has proved to be an extremely effective leader in guiding our athletic department to championship heights, both on and off the playing fields," Darryll Pines said.
"He has positioned our Terrapins for long-term success on the national stage and I couldn't be more pleased to have him leading the department for years to come."

Damon Evans has a storied career as an athletic director

Damon Evans played football for the Georgia Bulldogs and was the program's athletic director between 2004 and 2010. He was arrested for a DUI (driving under the influence) in 2010 and tendered his resignation as a result of the incident.

He then moved to the Terrapins as a senior associate athletic director in 2014. Evans became the interim AD in 2017 when former athletic director Kevin Anderson left his post.

It has been a successful tenure for the Terrapins under the leadership of Damon Evans. The Terrapins have accumulated 49 Big Ten championships and three national championships (men's & women's lacrosse and men's soccer) between 2017 and 2024, which is the third most in the country.

He has had a hand in hiring men's basketball coach Kevin Willard in 2022 and football coach Mike Locksley in 2018 under whose guidance the team has made program history by winning bowl games in three consecutive years.

After the deal was announced, Evans released a statement expressing his excitement at the contract extension.

"It is my privilege to represent this world-class university and athletic department as we lead boldly, provide a student-centered environment, and inspire pride throughout all of Terp Nation," Damon Evans said in the press release. "We continue to elevate this program with significant capital projects and substantial resource allocations."

Terrapins fans will be glad that Evans prolonged his stay at the school due to the relative success that has accompanied his seven-year tenure.
