Dan Lanning was announced as the 35th head football coach for the Oregon Ducks on December 11, 2021, by the athletic director Rob Mullens. Lanning prefers a defensive style of play and is one of the program's youngest head coaches. In 2022, he finished his first season with a 10-3 record and also won against North Carolina in the SDCCU Holiday Bowl. This made him the third head coach in Oregon history to win 10 games in an opening season. In 2023, Lanning continued his success with the Oregon team, finishing the season with a 12-2 record, making an appearance in the Pac-12 Championship Game, and winning the Fiesta Bowl against Liberty. In his first two years, Lanning posted a 22-5 mark and became the second Oregon head coach to win two consecutive bowl games in the first two seasons.
Dan Lanning began his collegiate coaching career in 2011 when he joined Pittsburgh as a graduate assistant and then successively coached at Arizona State, Sam Houston State, Alabama, and Memphis. Before his career at Oregon, Lanning spent four seasons at Georgia, including three years as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator. He joined Georgia initially as an outside linebackers coach in 2018 before becoming the team's defensive coordinator. Lanning transformed the defensive unit into one of the country's top defenses, helping Georgia win the national championship in 2022.
