Lanning is Oregon's 35th head coach and is one of the top young coaches in college football. He extensively worked on the defensive unit and developing players to the NFL standards. Before his career at Oregon, Lanning spent four years at the University of Georgia, where he served as defensive coordinator from 2019-2021. During his tenure, Georgia's defense was ranked in the top five programs in the nation, and they played a major role in helping Georgia capture the national championship in 2022. Lanning also coached at Arizona State, Sam Houston State, Alabama, and Memphis and is considered a relentless coach to ever step at the helm of college football. He moved to Alabama in 2015 as the Defensive Graduate Assistant for the outside linebackers. In 2016, he transferred to Memphis, where he served as inside linebackers coach until 2017. In 2018, he was named outside linebackers coach at Georgia and later became the program's defensive coordinator in 2019. At Georgia, Lanning was an integral part of Georgia's defenses in college football. Under his guidance, the team went on to win a national title in 2022. He was twice a Broyles Award finalist, for being the nation's top assistant coach.
