Florida State had a morbid 2024 season and the transfer portal has kept it coming. Freshman defensive end DD Holmes has joined the portal, marking yet another talented player likely headed out of Tallahassee. Holmes was a three-star recruit who didn't see meaningful playing time at Florida State. He played just one game and made one tackle.

So Holmes is now prepared to move on. A talented pass rusher who came up in and around Washington, DC, Holmes' list of potential suitors could be lengthy. That said, he doesn't have much college experience to utilize, but with four remaining years of eligibility, he should have plenty of portal possibilities. Here are four likely landing spots for Holmes.

4. Virginia

The Cavaliers recruited Holmes out of high school. Virginia had just 19 sacks in 2024 and three of the top four sack leaders were seniors. Coach Tony Elliott needs to up the athleticism off the edge of his defense to keep things moving forward. Holmes could be a significant part of that puzzle.

3. South Carolina

South Carolina had a massive step forward in 2024, winning nine games and narrowly missing a spot in the College Football Playoff. Shane Beamer likes athletic pass rushers and with 40 sacks, USC will play a style that would work well for Holmes. Three of USC's top six sack leaders were seniors, so Holmes could be an intriguing pickup for the Gamecocks.

2. Rutgers

With a 7-6 season, Rutgers remained relevant in the Big Ten. But the Scarlet Knights didn't do a great job rushing the passer. Their team leader in sacks had just four and three of the top five sack leaders were seniors. Rutgers, as a team, had just 22 sacks in 13 games. Holmes is imposing enough to be a day-one presence at Rutgers and could be an important addition there.

1. Maryland

But if Rutgers could use help, Maryland is practically screaming for it. The Terps are in Holmes' backyard, got an official visit from him out of high school, and desperately need pass rushers. Maryland (4-8) had just 14 team sacks on the season. Further, 4.5 of the 14 sacks came from seniors. The right mixture of need and opportunity comes together at Maryland.

Again, for a player like Holmes, getting back closer to home could be a big draw. So could immediate playing time and the chance to make a mark in a power conference. Maryland checks all those boxes and would be a wise destination.
