Former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard transferred to play for Ryan Day's Ohio State earlier this year. The 22-year-old will be making his Big Ten Conference debut with the Buckeyes when the season begins in the coming weeks.
But how many years of eligibility does Will Howard have before he needs to make his transition to the professional level?
Does Will Howard have another year of eligibility?
Yes, the Ohio State quarterback has one more year of collegiate eligibility left. This upcoming season will be his final college campaign before he declares for the 2025 NFL Draft.
He spent the last four seasons with the Kansas State Wildcats. He got an extra year of eligibility because of COVID-19. Thus, Will Howard will be making his Ohio State debut as a fifth-year senior.
So far, head coach Ryan Day has not named the starting quarterback of the Buckeyes for the 2024 season. However, given Howard's experience on the field, he has the highest possibility of becoming the QB1 as Kyle McCord's replacement.
Will Howard's college career
Hailing from Downingtown West High School, Howard joined the Wildcats as an early enrollee in 2020. He served as the backup quarterback to Skylar Thompson during his freshman season and got the opportunity to start the last seven games due to Thompson's injury.
Howard finished the season tallying 1,178 passing yards and eight TD passes. He served as a backup during the 2021 season as well, putting up 332 passing yards and one TD pass.
Will Howard then competed for the starting quarterback position in 2022 with Adrian Martinez. Martinez was ultimately named as the starter for that year's campaign. However, Howard replaced Martinez twice as the QB1 of the Wildcats on two various occasions due to injury. He recorded a total of 1,633 passing yards and 15 TD passes while winning the Big 12 championship game against TCU.
Last season, Howard was named as the QB1 of the team. He led the Wildcats to a 9-4 overall campaign along with a Pop Tart Bowl victory over NC State. The QB recorded a total of 2,643 passing yards and 24 TD passes. It will be interesting to see how he will perform in his final collegiate campaign with the Buckeyes.
