Penn State continues to make waves in the NCAA transfer portal, securing its second wide receiver commitment with the addition of Devonte Ross, a standout from Troy.
Ross, who announced on Instagram on Tuesday, is set to join the Nittany Lions for the 2025 season. He becomes the third transfer to commit to Penn State this offseason, following USC wide receiver Kyron Hudson and Texas A&M defensive end Enai White.
Ross has one year of eligibility remaining and brings a stellar record to Happy Valley. Last season, he earned first-team All-Sun Belt honors with 76 catches for 1,043 yards and 11 touchdowns, ranking among the top performers in his conference. He also showcased his versatility as a return specialist, averaging 17 yards per punt return and scoring a 77-yard touchdown against Iowa.
Known for his all-around ability, Ross averaged 120.4 all-purpose yards per game in 2024. His season highlights include a single-game record for Troy with 229 receiving yards against Florida A&M, featuring a 98-yard touchdown reception, the longest play in the program’s Division I history.
Penn State fans are thrilled about Ross’s potential impact.
One fan commented: “Drew Allar getting another very productive weapon to throw to in 2025!! Welcome to the family, Devonte!!”
Others noted Ross’s potential as a slot receiver while expressing hopes for the development of a top-tier wideout within the team.
Some fans debated the quality of wide receivers available in the transfer portal, with one writing:
"I'm not sure there was a clear #1 in the portal yet. Eric Singleton being the best wr in the portal, and his numbers are slightly better than harrison wallace, isn't really moving me."
“Tez Johnson is a slot receiver. Slot receiver doesn’t mean they can’t become the WR1,” another tweeted.
“This guy looks like a walk on for schools that are trying to win a national championship,” a fan said.
“Looks like a great slot WR, still need #1 WR,” a fan wrote.
“They are going to have to develop a #1. Not happening in portal,” another fan added.
Fiesta Bowl: Penn State vs. Boise State
The stage is set for an exciting showdown as the fifth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (12-2) take on the eighth-ranked Boise State Broncos (12-1, No. 3 seed in the CFP) in the Fiesta Bowl.
Scheduled for Dec. 31, the game will be played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and fans can catch the action live on ESPN or stream it via ESPN+.
Penn State, seeded sixth, heads into the CFP quarterfinal game as an 11-point favorite despite falling short in the Big Ten Championship.
Established in 1971 as a showcase for Western Athletic Conference teams, the Fiesta Bowl quickly grew in stature. In 1998, it joined the prestigious Bowl Championship Series lineup, solidifying its place as one of college football’s most important games.
