The Floyd of Rosedale trophy plays an important role in college football scene. The trophy is associated with the Iowa-Minnesota college football games. The teams are the Iowa Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa and the Minnesota Golden Gophers from the University of Minnesota. They are both members of the Big Ten Conference in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Both teams have competed against each other 118 times as of 2024.
The origin of the Floyd of Rosedale trophy is associated with the efforts to reduce increasing tensions and controversies regarding racism in the 1935 game between the two teams. Notably in 1934, Ozzie Simmons, the balck member of the Iowa Hawekeyes team was subjected to racial baiting by the players of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. This was followed by Clyde Herring, the Governor of Iowa accusing the Minnesota Golden Gophers of taking cheap shots and violent tactics against Ozzie Simmons. Ultimately, Floyd B. Olson, the Governor of Minnesota had a discussion with the Iowa Governor and agreed that a live hog would be awarded to the winner of the rivalry from the team of the losing Governor in 1935. However, they again agreed that presenting a live hog was not a good idea a year later and this led to the creation of Floyd of Rosedale. Since then, the trophy has been presented to either Iowa or Minnesota depending on the winning team in the rivalry.
