Freddie Kitchens is the offensive assistant for the North Carolina Tar Heels, as of 2024, as per 247Sports. Kitchens was the interim head coach for the Tar Heels before the appointment of Bill Belichick. Kitchens is a former football player who played for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team as a quarterback. The Crimson Tide were champions of the 1995 Citrus Bowl and the 1997 Outback Bowl when Freddie Kitchens was the starter for the program.

After graduating college, Kitchens began his coaching career. He first served as a running backs and tight ends coach at Glenville State College in West Virginia before moving to Louisiana State University (LSU) as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban. His collegiate coaching journey continued at North Texas and Mississippi State, where he honed his skills further before transitioning to the NFL. In 2006, Kitchens joined the Dallas Cowboys as a tight ends coach under Bill Parcells. His NFL career flourished with the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent eleven years coaching various positions including tight ends, quarterbacks, and running backs. He was part of the coaching staff that led the Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII in 2008.

Kitchens returned to college football briefly before taking on a significant role with the Cleveland Browns. Initially hired as running backs coach in 2018, he was promoted to offensive coordinator mid-season. In January 2019, Kitchens was appointed head coach of the Browns but faced challenges during his tenure, finishing with a record of 6-10. In 2023, he was named the interim coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
