During his high school days, he completed 594 passes out of 862 throws, amassing a total of 9,333 yards and 101 touchdowns. Following his high school career, he was rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports; and had offers lined up from Utah, Virginia Tech, and Vanderbilt, among a handful of others. Finally, he decided to pursue his football career at the University of Oklahoma State. Garret was always known for accurate passes and his arm strength. He is 6-feet-226-pounds with some desirable physical attributes for a college-level QB. His throws are usually from a high release point to add an extra inch to his throws. He has excellent anticipation and timing with receivers. Truly a pocket passer, he can be effective in making plays on the run, which shows his versatility. His high school accolades include the distinction of being an ‘Offensive MVP’ and a member of the ESPN300, where he was ranked among the top QBs nationally.

Rangel's best college season came in 2022 as a freshman. He completed 59 of 115 passes covering 711 yards, with four touchdowns and five interceptions. He played in four games and started three of them. His first start came against Kansas, where he went 27 passes of 40 for 304 yards and two touchdowns; that happened to be the seventh most passing yards by a freshman in Oklahoma State history. It shows his true potential and character when under pressure. In the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Wisconsin, Rangel threw for 229 yards and earned two touchdowns, including an 84-yard touchdown pass, which went to Stephon Johnson Jr. for the longest play from scrimmage for Oklahoma State that season. His ability to deliver deep passes and maintain composure during high-stakes games showed that he's ready for collegiate competition and foreshadowed a bright future ahead for this young quarterback.
