In American football, the University of Georgia is represented by the Georgia Bulldogs football program. The Bulldogs participate in both the Southeastern Conference's (SEC) Eastern Division and the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). On the campus in Athens, Georgia, the university's historic Sanford Stadium serves as the venue for its home games.

While the Bulldogs have been selected as the national champion three times by both the AP and Coaches Polls (1980, 2021, and 2022), Georgia has also claimed four consensus national championships (1942, 1980, 2021, and 2022). In four other seasons, Georgia was declared the National Champion by at least one polling organization (1920, 1927, 1946 and 1968).

Some notable achievements of the Bulldogs include 16 conference titles—14 of which are SEC titles, the second-most in conference annals—and 61 bowl game appearances—the second-most in school history. Along with numerous other national award winners, the program has produced five first-round selections for the National Football League (NFL), two Heisman Trophy winners, and numerous others.

Aside from its legendary past, the team is well-known for its own customs and ferocious fan support, dubbed "Bulldog Nation." Georgia has finished in the Top 10 in the AP Poll 27 times, including 14 Top 5 finishes, and has won over 860 games in its history, ranking them ninth all-time in wins.

How many National Championships has Georgia won?

Georgia has won four national championships.

(1942, 1980, 2021, 2022)

NCAA-designated major selectors have chosen Georgia as a national champion eight times (1920, 1927, 1942, 1946, 1968, 1980, 2021, and 2022). Four national titles are claimed by Georgia (1942, 1980, 2021, and 2022).

They were declared the national champions by the four major consensus selectors (AP, coaches, FWAA, and NFF), and concluded as the only team remaining unbeaten in 1980 with their victory in the 1981 Sugar Bowl.

They ended a 41-year title drought in 2021 when they won the College Football Playoff and defeated Alabama in the CFP National Championship Game. They went 15-0 to become the only unbeaten team in 2022 and went on to win the 2023 CFP National Championship Game.

When was the last time Georgia won the National Championships?

The most recent Georgia’s national championship win was in 2022.

In order to complete 15-0 for the first time in school history and win the national championship, the Bulldogs defeated TCU 65–7 in the 2022 national championship game. The Georgia Bulldogs competed for the National Championship in the 2017–18 season prior to that.
