The Golden Egg trophy is one of the major trophies to be awarded in college football games. The Golden Egg is awarded to the winner of games between the Ole Miss Rebels team of the University of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs team of the Mississippi State University. Both these teams are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). They have faced off against each other 120 times in the past with their first encounter taking place in 1901. Both teams are set to face off against each other once again for the Golden Egg on Friday, November 29, 2024.

What is the rivalry between Mississippi State and Ole Miss called?

The rivalry between Mississippi State and Ole Miss is called the Egg Bowl or “Battle for the Golden Egg”.

The origins of the Golden Egg can be traced back to 1927 when the Ole Miss Rebels ended their 13-game losing streak by winning the 1926 game. This led to the fans of the team rushing to the team intending to take down the goal post. As a result, the fans of the Mississippi State Bulldogs (then known as the Mississippi A&M Aggies) did not like fans from the opposing team destroying their property and this resulted in a brawl between fans of the two teams including chairs being thrown. Later, it was decided in 1927 that a trophy should be created and presented to the winner of the 1927 game to prevent another brawl like the previous year. This led to the creation of the Golden Egg Trophy which resembles a traditional gold-plated football mounted on a wooden base.
