Gregg McElroy has been around for a while, and he has seen numerous players thrive at the collegiate level. After the conclusion of Week 6 of the 2024 college football season, McElroy believes that the best player in the nation is a running back rather than a quarterback or wide receiver.
Speaking on his Always College Football show, McElroy said,
"Ashton Jeanty is the best player right now, pound for pound, in the sport."
The ESPN college football analyst continued:
"Through five games, he is already over 1,000 rushing yards and is on pace for 2,700 rushing yards. He might even flirt with 3,000 rushing yards. The guy is just absolutely ridiculous. Usually, if you are a running back and you go for over 2,000, then you are right there in the Heisman mix. If he goes well beyond 2,000 yards, it is a very real chance he could bring home the most coveted award in collegiate football.”
The bookmakers agree with McElroy's assessment, as Jeanty is currently the betting favorite for the Heisman. bet365 has the Boise State superstar at +225 after Jalen Milroe and the Alabama Crimson Tide lost to Vanderbilt Commodores. Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter is second in those odds at +350.
How did Ashton Jeanty perform in Week 6?
Ashton Jeanty had a stat line of 186 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 13 rushes. The Boise State star was the main catalyst behind their 62-30 win over Utah State.
With his Week 6 performance, Jeanty became just the eighth FBS running back since 1996 to surpass the 1,000-yard rushing mark five games into a season. The other players on the list are Ricky Williams and Leonard Fournette. The game sees Jeanty continue his streak of having over 120 rushing yards in every game of the 2024 season.
What's next for Ashton Jeanty and Boise State?
Ashton Jeanty has been having a junior year for ages, and he is steadily improving his draft stock in the process. He has been crucial in Boise State's consistent Top 25 status and is one of those teams that opponents hate to face.
Up next for Boise State is a trip to Hawaii to face off against the Rainbow Warriors. Hawaii is fresh off a close loss to San Diego State in Week 6. They'll be looking to open their Mountain West Conference account for the season.
Ashton Jeanty will be the star attraction in Week 7 as fans, analysts, and scouts will tune in to see what the dynamic runner has in store against another collegiate program.
