Nick Saban coached many great wide receivers at Alabama. Coach Saban had the pick of the bunch in the pre-NIL era, as most four and five-star pass catchers wanted to play for the Crimson Tide.
Hence, when Coach Saban dishes out a compliment to a young receiver, you know it's a big deal. Recently, Saban compared current Bama rising star Ryan Williams to a former player of his, Amari Cooper. Here's what the seven-time national champion head coach said about Williams:
Ryan Williams is enjoying a blistering start to Alabama career
Ryan Williams introduced himself to the football world in a special way. The freshman wide receiver recorded a stat line of two catches, 139 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in his first-ever game this season.
Williams followed up that performance by recording four catches, 68 receiving yards, and one touchdown in his second game. He added four catches, 78 receiving yards, and one touchdown in game three.
Hi stellar performances have led to comparisons with Cooper, who is currently playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Amari Cooper had a phenomenal freshman year playing for Nick Saban
Amari Cooper came into Alabama fresh off a solid high school run with Miami Northwestern Senior High School. He joined the Crimson Tide for the 2012 college football season and didn't waste time getting busy with the drills.
Cooper played in all 14 games as a freshman and started the final nine games of the season. He led the Crimson Tide with 59 catches for 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. Cooper's performances earned him consensus Freshman All-American honors and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team, which is voted for by the league coaches.
Cooper played two more seasons with the Alabama, earning a slew of awards in the process. He was drafted in the first round of the 2015 draft, and he has had a great professional career filled with individual honors, team records, and impressive performances.
