With Week 3 of the college football season over, the contenders for the Heisman Trophy are becoming clearer. Although there is still a lot of the season left to play, some players have set themselves apart and look like strong contenders for the coveted honor. Here are five players who look like favorites after Week 3.
5 Heisman Trophy favorites after Week 3
These are five players who could contend for the Heisman Trophy by the end of the season and we have included those who could contend because of their stats and the narrative surrounding them.
#1 Travis Hunter
Travis Hunter had one of the most dominant performances of Week 3. The star two-way player stood out on both offense and defense. On offense, he had 13 receptions for 100 yards and scored two touchdowns.
On defense, he had a signature performance that got many fans and pundits in the college football community talking. The play that has been much talked about was his interception where he picked off a pass in the third quarter. He then returned the ball 38 yards after juking several defenders to pick up extra yardage.
#2 Cameron Ward
Quarterback Cameron Ward is the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy at this point of the season according to FanDuel with +480 odds. It makes sense given his stats and his team's performance.
Ward got on the radar of Heisman voters early in the season as he helped Miami crush in-state rival Florida in Week 1. Since then, he has helped the Hurricanes score 118 points in their last two games.
#3 Jalen Milroe
The Alabama QB always receives Heisman Trophy attention, and Jalen Milroe deserves it. He has played a big part in the Crimson Tide's 3-0 start.
Alabama always gets a lot of attention from the media, so being the Crimson Tide's QB helps Milroe's case. However, he has set himself apart with his performance regardless. Milroe is known for his ability to run with the football and he has done that early this year as he has scored two rushing touchdowns in all three games.
#4 Jaxson Dart
Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart is another betting favorite for the Heisman this year. What stands out about Dart is his consistency as he has recorded between 377 and 418 yards in all three of his games so far this season. However, his biggest performance of the year came in Week 1 when he threw five passing touchdowns and helped his team put up 76 points.
#5 Arch Manning
Arch Manning skyrocketed up the Heisman Trophy odds after Texas' game on Saturday. After starting QB Quinn Ewers went down with an injury, Manning performed well in relief.
Although Manning did not have a signature play that stood out in the game, his poise under pressure impressed fans. Many on social media even started saying he should stay as the starter even if Quinn Ewers is healthy again. It is possible that some people just love cheering for a player with a famous name, but there is no denying that Manning played well in his first significant performance of the year.
