The University of Oklahoma's Sooners play in the NCAA Division I FBS at the Big 12 Conference. As of April 2024, their 23rd head coach, Brent Venables, is in his third season. They have a total of seven claimed and 10 unclaimed national titles, while being four national finalists.

They also have eight division titles and 50 conference titles. Their most recent national title was in 2000, under coach Bob Stoops, who won six different Coach of the Year honors in that same year.

At Oklahoma, four men have coached the team in more than 100 games; they have all achieved more than 100 victories. It is the first program in history to have four coaches with 100 wins. Lincoln Riley is the coach with the greatest winning percentage in school history, going 55–10 (.846) in five seasons.

The University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas sent a joint letter of intent to the Big 12 Conference in July 2021, expressing interest in joining the Southeastern Conference (SEC), but also announcing that they have no intention of renewing their media rights agreements with the conference, which are set to expire following the 2024 season.

In order to leave for the SEC in 2024—a year earlier than anticipated and before the media rights agreements expired—the Big 12 disclosed in February 2023 that the universities had consented to an early termination fee totaling $100 million.

In the 2023 NFL draft, the Oklahoma Sooners had five players drafted: first round 27th pick offensive tackle Antor Harrison to the Jacksonville Jaguars; second round 32nd pick wide receiver Marvin Mims to the Denver Broncos; third round 29th pick offensive tackle Wanya Morris to the Kansas City Chiefs; fifth round 37th pick running back Eric Gray to the New York Giants; and seventh-round 30th pick tight end Brayden Willis to the San Francisco 49ers.

Seven Heisman Trophy winners, 50 conference titles, 167 first-team All-Americans (35 unanimous, 82 consensus), and seven national titles are all credited with the program.

The university has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame 29 times by former players and coaches, and with 47 straight wins, it owns the record for the longest winning run in Division I history.
