Hugh Freeze returned to the SEC in 2023 with Auburn, and his hiring was welcomed within the university community due to his record against in-state rival Alabama at Ole Miss. Freeze is one of the seven coaches to have won against Nick Saban twice during his time at Alabama.
Throughout their head coaching careers, Freeze and Saban met on six occasions. For Freeze, five of them came during his time at Ole Miss while the last one was at Auburn. Saban, on the other hand, played all the matches between them in his 17 years at Alabama.
Saban led the rivalry between the two with a 4-2 record. Freeze had both his wins during his time with the Rebels while Saban won against him three times while Freeze was at Ole Miss and once while coaching Alabama's in-state rival Auburn in Saban's final season in college football.
Hugh Freeze vs Nick Saban's H2H record
Hugh Freeze believes he should have won four times against Nick Saban
While Hugh Freeze recorded two wins against Nick Saban, he believes it should have been four. The Auburn coach made this known during his appearance on the “Marty and McGee Talkin’ Season” show on SEC Network.
“Nick is incredible, but I should have four wins against him," Freeze said. "We beat him twice and we had them 24-3 the third year, and I wasn't smart enough to slow it down. Then last year, it could have easily gone our way. I may have not phrased that exactly right, I don't want everybody, but we could've easily beat him a few more times."
The two games he believes he should have won were in 2016 and 2023. Ole Miss had a 24-3 lead over Alabama in the second quarter of the 2016 game before the Crimson Tide secured a 48-43 comeback win against the Rebels in Oxford.
Also, Auburn was running away in 2023 with it before Jalen Milroe’s final-minute touchdown pass broke Freeze’s heart. The Iron Bowl played a crucial role in securing Alabama a spot in the College Football Playoff.
