Iowa vs. Iowa State is one of the longest-running rivalries in college football. The rivalry dates all the way back to 1894, and the two teams have since played 70 games over the course of 130 years. The two teams will compete in their 71st matchup on Saturday.

Who is Iowa's starting QB today?

When the game gets started on Saturday, Iowa will play behind starting quarterback Cade McNamara.

McNamara is a fifth-year senior who's starting his second season with Iowa. He had previously played three years in Michigan, where he had mixed results because of injuries in two of his three seasons. He transferred to Iowa for the 2023 season.

Unfortunately, for McNamra, last year wasn't what he would have hoped it to be. In his fifth game of the season, he suffered a season-ending knee injury against Michigan State. In the games he played, he completed 46 passes on 90 attempts and threw for 505 yards and four touchdowns.

This season, McNamara has gotten out to a strong start. In his first game of the season against Illinois State, he threw 21 completions on 31 attempts and 252 yards. Three of those passes resulted in touchdowns. He will start again this week in the Iowa vs. Iowa State matchup.

Rocco Becht is starting his third season at Iowa State and his second as the starter. In his first season as the starter, he completed 231 passes on 367 attempts and threw for 3120 yards and 23 touchdowns. It was a big breakout season for Becht.

This season, Becht is off to an equally strong start. In a win over North Dakota, he completed 20 of 26 passes and threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He will start again this week in the Iowa vs. Iowa State matchup.

Iowa vs. Iowa State: Head-to-head history

Iowa and Iowa State have a long and prolific history. The two teams first competed in 1894 and have since played 70 games against each other. They competed often between 1894 and 1934, but there was then an over 40-year hiatus until they played again in 1977.

Since the rivalry started again, the two teams have played every year with one exception. There wasn't a game in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iowa has dominated the matchup for the most part over the years. The Hawkeyes have a 47-23 record against Iowa State and have won eight of the last 10 games. That includes winning 20-13 last year. The Cyclones will hope to turn things around in this year's Iowa vs. Iowa State matchup.
