"It was unbearable": Dan Lanning's wife Sauphia details her suffering during bone cancer diagnosis

Dan Lanning and his wife Sauphia tied the knot in 2009 and have been together since.

The couple are parents to three boys: Caden, Kniles and Titan. The triplets were born in 2013, years after Dan Lanning bagged his first coaching job as a graduate assistant with the University of Pittsburgh in 2011.

Lanning always knew his ambitions and worked hard, while Sauphia held the fort at home. She looked after their kids to help the now Oregon head coach continue chasing his dreams.

However, tragedy struck the Lannings in May 2016 when it was found that Sauphia had been diagnosed with bone cancer.

During Week 7's college GameDay feature for cancer awareness, Sauphia talked about her thought process during the tough time.

"May of 2016 I started to feel a little bit of discomfort in my knee. It just progressively got worse, to the point where it was unbearable, It was a scary thing, even telling my husband," she said.

Dan Lanning also spoke about his mindset after hearing the news:

"I was in a coaching retreat, and Sophia called me and said she has cancer and nothing prepares you for that. We came home really grateful for Coach Norvell. In that situation, I felt like I wanted to be at work, maybe pull my mind away, and he wouldn't let me."

"Trying to envision what my life and our kids life looked like without Sophia, and just knew that wasn't an option for us. Made you grow in your faith. You're on your knees every night praying."

Sauphia Lanning attended North Kansas City High School in 2005 and later completed her bachelor's degree in marketing and public relations from Northwest Missouri State University in 2009.

During her time at the university, Sauphia served as a resident assistant. She promoted and effectively planned and executed educational events and programs, provided residential guidance and resources, and created innovative educational bulletin boards to build a positive community with residents.

She now works as a marketing coordinator at H&R Block, specializing in event planning and advertising campaigns.
