J.J. McCarthy scouting report: Profile, team fits, strengths, flaws and draft stock prediction

Michigan Michigan St Football
McCarthy is the current Heisman favorite

Recently, J.J. McCarthy has shot up in the Heisman Trophy watchlist, with the young signal-caller having odds of +200, according to bookies. McCarthy has thrown for 1799 passing yards, with 18 touchdowns and three interceptions in the season so far. His 93.7 QBR ranks first among quarterbacks nationally.

The Michigan Wolverines players would have only one issue with his ability to get the trophy, which is the fact that his team has yet to face a ranked opponent. Michael Penix's victory over Oregon or Dillon Gabriel's over Texas might look more impressive in the grand scheme.

However, there's no need to despair for the Michigan QB, as his school will face two heavyweights, Penn State and Ohio State, before the voting takes place.

J.J. McCarthy's scouting profile

Measurements

McCarthy is 6-foot-3 and 202 pounds, making him an imposing figure on the field. McCarthy is tall enough to have a wide field of view above his offensive linemen and has the frame to absorb hits.

Strengths

He has excellent mechanics for a QB of his age, which would simplify his transition into the NFL. His athleticism and agility are way above average and have proven to be an asset. He's a fast passer of the ball, which he uses to make throws even under tight coverage situations. His ability to use his sidearm to protect his passing window is underrated.

Weaknesses

Despite having a strong frame, he has a lean build. It's clear that the coaching staff at Michigan has looked to fix this, with his weight improving from the 180 pounds he was reported to weigh during high school. Also, pressure from the rival defense can cause him to hesitate, paired with his inability to see looming LBs.

J.J. McCarthy's draft projection

247Sports ranked him as a potential second-rounder back in 2020. Much has changed since then due to his time at Michigan. CBS Sports has predicted him going at No. 9 and a potential pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There's a lot of time to go before the end of the NFL season, and we'll have to wait for the order of the draft to know at which exact spot he could be picked. However, we can confidently say that J.J. McCarthy has risen to first-rounder.
