In 2021, Retzlaff made an impressive debut as a true freshman at Golden West College. He threw for 3,302 yards and 23 touchdowns over 12 games. His remarkable performance made him the top-rated junior college quarterback in the nation.

In his first start against West Virginia, Retzlaff threw for 210 yards despite a tough loss (37-7). He secured his first touchdown pass at the FBS level in a subsequent game against Iowa State. As of November 2024, Retzlaff has solidified his position as BYU's starting quarterback.
