James Franklin is a head coach, appointed by the Penn State Nittany Lions in January 2014. Franklin previously coached at Vanderbilt University, winning nine back-to-back games in two seasons as the head coach. He won the Big Ten championship for Penn State in 2016. Franklin also appeared in five New Year’s Six bowl games from which his team won three. He has over 30 years of coaching experience and will enter his 11th season for the Nittany Lions. Before becoming a head coach, Franklin gained coaching experience as an offensive coordinator at Maryland and Kansas State. The Nittany Lions finished the season with an 11-3 record and pulled off several comeback victories, one of which was against Ohio State. The team ended the regular season winning nine straight games and the team was ranked in the AP Poll's top 10. Franklin also guided Penn State to an 86% successful graduation rate with 1,000 APR during the 2018-19 season which was a record-breaking performance in the program.
